Finding our Purpose for Singing
I was at a party last weekend, and several people asked me a similar question since it was the first time I saw many of these friends since the big launch of MikeBroseMusic.com, this blog, and the Mike’s Open Mic YouTube concept. “But what is it all FOR, Mike?”
The concept of WHAT IS IT FOR is an important one for all of us to consider in all facets of our lives. There are many experts that can help us explore this topic deeper if we need to. Go check out the links later - you will not be disappointed.
Seth Godin covers this at length in his books, blog, and podcast as it relates to respect, tribes, marketing, and creating meaningful change in the world.
Simon Sinek’s approach can be found in similar media and videos all focused on Finding Your Why.
For US - for the Hesitant Singers - the key we need to discover to open the door to sharing our musical gift is understanding why we sing at all. WHAT IS IT FOR? Here are some of the infinite examples out there that motivate people to sing.
Belonging: People like us sing - we are part of that tribe - we have common interests and culture.
Accomplishment: The sense of achieving something and being part of something bigger than ourselves.
Thrills: Standing in front of people and being vulnerable as a singer often delivers an adrenaline rush.
Escape: The world today can be harsh, confusing, depressing if we allow it to be. For many, singing and music is the artistic escape needed to persevere in tough times.
Applause: Like the Lady Gaga song says, “I live for the applause.” Do NOT let your natural negative tendencies and internal resistance tell you that wanting the applause is bad or makes the journey somehow less genuine. Who doesn’t like - who doesn’t NEED - the validation that comes from positive reinforcement of any kind.
For ME…. this is what is it all for…. to create a tribe of people that belong, that are thrilled by the sense of accomplishment, and feel great being creative exploring their inner artist, and being recognized for it.
So I’m glad you are here - I am delighted to share - and I am eager to hear you sing!
