It is NEVER too late to start singing.... here is MY story!

We hear so many young singers in the media today from adorable children on YouTube to ambitious young adults on The Voice. It is easy to convince yourself that it is too late for you, that it is not worth getting started. I don’t buy that and neither should you! Here is my story:

You have to rewind the clock nearly 10 years, when I was already 40 years old. Remember, I am a pianist so when my family arrived in Fairbanks, Alaska, I wanted to jump back into music and help at our small humble church in the woods. I volunteered to play the piano, since that what I did, right? However, on one fateful day at rehearsal, a soloist was struggling with a complicated melody line. I was playing the line and instinctively started singing it with him, to provide him some support and confidence. Uh oh!!

The choir leader looked at me funny….. cocked her head a bit in confusion…. and said very gently, “Mike, why don’t you step away from the piano and come over here by the mic and sing.”

I didn’t really know what I was doing, but we had plenty of instrumental support, and I really did add more value at that point by singing. Thus started my journey where I met amazing people, found my new piano teacher, and jumped head first into the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival community.

You never really know where or how your musical journey begins, but it always starts with that first note.
